Dental Office Assistant Professional Program: Creating One Beautiful Smile at a Time

Smiling dental office assistant

Dental office assistants are usually the first face patients see when walking into a dental office. Many people have anxiety about going to the dentist, so a nice smiling face when they walk into the office can ease anxiety and make their experience better. Dental office assistants often handle clerical duties within a dental office. This may include:

  • Scheduling appointments
  • Handling insurance claims
  • Monitoring inventory
  • Coordinating what is happening in the office and making sure the other dental staff is aware
  • Handling patient documents and forms
  • Pulling patient charts
  • Responding to emails
  • Handling office accounting
  • In some offices, dental office assistants may assist the dentist or the dental hygienist with patient care. However, this will vary by office.

Ed4Career’s Dental Office Assistant online career training course bundle includes other courses preparing you to work with electronic health records and how to document and maintain patient privacy. Our course bundle also assists with interpersonal communication. Working in an office setting, you will come across many different personality types and if there is conflict, you will likely be the first person patients come to. This course in interpersonal communication will help you identify different personalities and educate you on how to handle conflict within the workplace. We also offer Microsoft Office®, email training and keyboarding made easy. These courses will allow companies to identify that you are skilled in typing quickly and accurately as well as able to answer emails with the proper etiquette. This will make you more marketable as you will likely be typing and answering emails frequently.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the occupation of dental office assistants will increase 19% from 2016 to 2026. Research continues to link good oral health to better overall health. Patients are often keeping their original teeth longer than in previous generations and as the baby boomers age, we will continue to see an increase in the need for preventative dental services.
